Pursuant to Article IV, Section 2 and Article VIII, Section 1 of the MAPPS Bylaws, a special meeting of the membership will be held on Thursday, January 28 at 9:00 am (HST) at The Westin Hotel, Maui, Hawaii, during the Winter Meeting. The purpose of this meeting is to present to the membership a set of amendments to the MAPPS bylaws (link to attached). Many of the amendments have been recommended to the MAPPS Board of Directors by a Membership Task Force that was established in May 2009 and most are clerical and conforming in nature. They change the name of a full member firm in MAPPS from Active Member to Regular Member, clarify the right of Associate Member firms to be Sustaining Members, and implement the practice of new members in all categories paying dues on an anniversary date basis, rather than a calendar year. The substantive changes clarify that a firm must have an office in the United States to qualify as an Regular Member, rather than a home office, and create a new category of membership for Independent Consultants for individuals who would not otherwise qualify for membership under the other categories in the MAPPS bylaws, is not affiliated with any firm that would otherwise qualify for membership, has no employees, is engaged in consulting in or to the geospatial profession, and provides a consulting service of interest to the geospatial profession. The proposed new category is to accommodate into the MAPPS membership an emerging and growing segment of the private geospatial community.
