Parcels for the Nation (Mortgage Crisis)

Land parcel data (cadastral data) provide geographically referenced information about the rights, interests, and ownership of land and are an important part of the financial, legal, and real estate systems of society. The data are used by governments to make decisions about land development, business activities, regulatory compliance, emergency response, and law enforcement. MAPPS has advocated for the creation and utilization of a parcel level and creating a map of the United States. This map could have created an ‘Early Warning System’ during the mortgage crisis of 2008. MAPPS has commented and testified to Congress on the importance of parcel data layers at all levels of government.
